Poker

The name Poker is derived from several earlier games. It is believed that the game was first called poker by a man named Jonathan H. Green who observed it being played on a Mississippi riverboat. The game involved two or four players and a deck of twenty cards, with the “Aces” representing the highest card value. In addition to its seedy origins, Poker is still a relatively simple game that involves a large amount of cheating and is played for money.

The highest-ranking card in the hand wins the pot. If no combination can be made, the second highest card is worth more. Two identical cards are called a pair. A player wins the pot if he has the higher pair. Similarly, a five-card hand known as a straight wins if two players have the same rank, but differ in suit. The highest-ranking card wins in a tie. Poker is an excellent game for couples and for people who enjoy playing card games.

After the dealer has revealed 5 cards, players are dealt seven cards. This includes two personal cards and five community cards. The dealer then turns over the button position to the next player to the left. This procedure repeats itself until all players have checked their cards and no one has opened their betting. Players then can draw replacement cards as needed and then analyze the table. This replacement card can occur during or after a betting round, but it is rare in professional games.
