Generally, poker is a game of skill where the goal is to get the most chips from your opponents. Poker can be played by any number of people, but the ideal number is six or eight players.
The basic rules of poker are that a poker hand is made up of five cards, and the best hand wins. Poker is played with a standard pack of 52 cards. The cards are ranked from Ace to Jack. Normally, there is no relative rank for the suits, although the ace is often considered the lowest card.
When a hand is made up of four cards of the same rank, the high card wins. Two four of a kind of the same rank and rank rank wins the pot if the high card is outside the four of a kind. If there are ties, the high card breaks them.
The cards are dealt one at a time, and the initial dealer shuffles them. Cards may be dealt face up or face down.
The initial dealer deals the cards to all the players. Each player must put in a certain number of chips in the pot. The player who placed the first bet is the one who has the right to make the next bet.
All other players have the right to fold if they feel that they do not have a good hand. The player who folded does not have to compete for the pot, but may be able to bluff other players.
